Unhappy girls, body image and the power of social media by Shaun Moore | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/
In response to the recent Children’s Society Report, The Bishop of Gloucester, the Right Revd Rachel Treweek says we can no longer ignore the issues that social media can cause young people, in relation to their body image and unhappiness, especially in girls.
Bishop Rachel said. “The scale of the problem we now face, with young people valuing who they are and how happy they are, based on physical appearance urgently needs addressing. The recent Children’s Society report identified that a third of girls are unhappy with their appearance and we know that many girls base what the ‘perfect body image’ is through social media and advertising.
“We need to start encouraging young women to discover who they are as a whole person and to delight in that. So much of what they experience through social media presents a message of value based on physical appearance. This often leads to low self-esteem, which can lead to mental health issues.
“Over the coming months I hope to meet with young people in secondary schools and listen to their voices about what matters to them and how we can challenge the perception of value being associated with body image. I long for every young person to discover their worth as a unique individual created in the image of God and to find happiness as they go on becoming who they have been created to be.”
