Alex Bingham

On Friday 4 March at Bristol Crown Court, Alex Bingham, aged 26, of Matson Lane in Gloucester, was sentenced to a total of 36 months in prison after being convicted of driving whilst disqualified (four months) and dwelling burglary (32 months).

During the late afternoon on Saturday 30 January 2016, a burglary occurred at a property in the centre of Winchcombe. A large amount of highly sentimental jewellery and porcelain was stolen from the property.

Gloucestershire Police launched an immediate enquiry and were able to establish that a local traffic enforcement officer had seen something suspicious at the time of the burglary. From her body worn CCTV, police were able to identify the car used during the offence and the driver of the vehicle was Alex Bingham.

Police located the car on Marlborough Road in Gloucester and later stolen property was recovered from inside the vehicle. Nearby, Alex Bingham was located and arrested on suspicion of dwelling burglary and driving whilst disqualified. He was interviewed, charged and remanded to court after admitting the crime when presented with the police case. Police officers were able to persuade Bingham to show them where more stolen property was hidden in a rural location.

Sergeant Chris Barnes of Tewkesbury Local Policing, the officer in charge of the case, said: “Alex Bingham attacked a premises owned by an elderly couple and stole many items of sentimental value they had collected throughout their lives – only focusing on making money for his own needs.

“I was pleased that our investigation has not only led to the community being protected from him by his prison sentence, but also allowed us to recover some of the stolen items and be in a position to return the property in the very near future. I would like to thank the local community for their assistance in this case and especially the civil enforcement officer who recorded her suspicions on this occasion.”
