Jeremy Hilton steps down as Lib Dem county leader – To concentrate of other political projects by Shaun Moore | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/
Liberal Democrat county councillor, Jeremy Hilton is to step down as group leader on Gloucestershire County Council, with immediate effect. Cllr. Hilton has been Lib Dem group leader for a total of ten years.
Jeremy Hilton said: “I am going to take at least a year’s sabbatical from a leading role at Shire Hall, in order to concentrate on other political and personal projects.
“My reasons are threefold.
“Firstly, we have Gloucester City Council elections in May and with good fortune we shall have a strong Liberal Democrat group after 5th May. I want to ensure that our new city council group beds in well and that we become a dynamic team on the council.
“Secondly, I have 18 months to run as the Liberal Democrats national Local Government Association (LGA) spokesperson for the fire and rescue service.
“I am incredibly busy as the chairperson of the LGA’s Fire Services Management Committee. We are lobbying for changes to the Police and Crime Bill. Last week I met the Home Secretary to explain to her the LGA’s opinion about the bill. The proposed legislation could see Police and Crime Commissioners running the fire service rather than local councillors. In Gloucestershire, this would see the county council lose responsibility for managing our superb fire and rescue service.
“Finally, we have elections to the county council in 2017 and I wish to spend more time in my division of Kingsholm & Wotton, improving things for the community that I represent. I also want to help my colleagues in Gloucester return more county councillors at the next elections. I wish my successor all the best.”
