Gloucester to be transformed into a giant walking and cycling game this Summer by | Gloucester News Centre - http://gloucesternewscentre.co.uk/
Gloucester is set to be transformed into a giant game this Summer as thousands of residents compete to see if their school, community or business can walk, run or cycle the furthest.
Running from 7 June and 19 July, Beat the Street is a free, fun challenge where people are rewarded with points and prizes for exploring their city on foot or bicycle.
More than 70 special sensors called ‘Beat Boxes’ will appear across the city. Players tap the Beat Boxes will cards and fobs to track their journey and earn points for themselves and their team – the more Beat Boxes people swipe the more points they earn.
Schools and community groups across Gloucester will be competing against each other to see if they can travel the furthest, climb the leaderboards and win hundreds of pounds worth of sport and fitness equipment. Families are encouraged to play for their local school while the wider community can create their own teams by emailing firstname.lastname@example.org
In addition to the leaderboard prizes, registered players can also win ‘Lucky Tap’ prizes for playing along – including sports and fitness vouchers and experience days.
More than 300,000 people across the UK and Ireland played Beat the Street in 2017 in London, Dublin, East Sussex, Belfast, Durham and other towns and cities.
Beat the Street is being delivered by Intelligent Health on behalf of Gloucestershire Moves. Gloucestershire Moves wants to get everyone moving more. They promote and support creative and inspiring programmes such as Beat the Street.
Kirsty Dunleavy, Head of Community Development for Active Gloucestershire, said: “We are incredibly excited to be bringing Beat the Street to Gloucester and can’t wait to see how far everyone is able to walk, run, cycle and scoot during the six-week challenge.
“Anyone is able to get involved in Beat the Street – it’s completely free to play and is a great opportunity to go outdoors, spend time with your friends and family and get moving. Watch out for Beat Boxes appearing on a street near you!”
