Gloucester City Council is urging all residents to use their vote this June when the general election takes place.

On Thursday 8th June 2017, elections will take place across the UK. Whatever your political views, it is important that you use your right to vote at all elections.

If you are eligible to vote you will have been sent a polling card telling you the date and time of the election and the address of your polling station.

For those who have not registered to vote, you still have time. Visit this website and register your right to vote before the 22nd May

Unless you have applied for a postal or proxy vote, you should go to the polling station stated on your poll card on the date of the election during the hours shown on the card.

You can show the polling station staff your poll card, but you do not need it to vote. You will be asked to provide your name and address.

Once inside the polling booth you can cast your vote, and are advised to fold the ballot paper so your vote remains private.

Your voting slip won’t have the names and photos of the candidates who are currently leading the national political parties. This is your vote for your local member of parliament (MP) so it will be their names and photos on your voting slip.

An MP represents the area you live in at a national level in the House of Commons.

If you are not sure what to do, ask the polling station staff to help you, but do not let anyone see your vote.

Jon McGinty, Gloucester’s returning officer and managing director at Gloucester City Council, said: “We would urge all those eligible to vote, to register and have their say. This is your opportunity to choose Gloucestershire’s MP’s.

“Voting is a privilege and a responsibility. By using your vote, you have the power to make your voice heard. I know that some people say their vote doesn’t matter, but it really does.

“It only takes a few short minutes to register and is really simple as well.”
