A home baker from Gloucester has gained a coveted runner up position in a national cake baking competition.

Emma Furniss, 48, baked a cake in the shape of a hot water bottle as her entry into National Accident Helpline’s#UnderdogCakeOff competition, which asked bakers from around the UK to create a cake around the theme of recovery.

She said: “I have a passion for baking and making cakes for family and friends.

“I love baking, but normally make biscuits or little cakes, so this was definitely a challenge!

“I thought of what I do when I am feeling a bit under the weather and a hot water bottle immediately came to mind.

“I wasn’t quite sure if I could replicate one as a cake but, having studied various pictures from the internet, I had a go and was pleased with the result.”

The competition closed in December and the winning entries were picked out by Reshmi Bennett, owner of acclaimed artisan patisserie Anges de Sucre.

She said: “I was really impressed how many entrants there were, and the quality of the entries, too!”
