For the first time ever a Chorister from every Cathedral in Britain will join the choir of St Paul’s Cathedral to perform some of Britain’s most-loved choral music.
On Wednesday 27 April “An Evening with the Cathedral Choristers of Britain” will take place at St Paul’s Cathedral in the presence of HRH the Duchess of Gloucester, to celebrate the launch of the Friends of Cathedral Music’s new £10million Diamond Fund for Choristers which provides financial assistance to choristers and their families.
Classic FM presenters Aled Jones, himself a former chorister at Bangor Cathedral, will be hosting the occasion, while Alexander Armstrong will reminisce about his own time as a chorister at Durham Cathedral and what it means to him personally.
Head Chorister, Crispin, age 14, a pupil at The King’s School, Gloucester has been chosen to represent Gloucester Cathedral and will travel to London, for the concert. He said “I have been a chorister for over seven years and have had so many great experiences through singing. I’ve sung in some amazing buildings and have travelled to South Africa, Sweden, Germany and Canada. I’ve never sung in St Paul’s Cathedral so I think it will be a good experience. This is a great opportunity for me to give something back to the Friends of Cathedral Music. They have supported the choristers for many years.”
Gloucester Cathedral’s Director of Music, Adrian Partington added “It is a great honour for Crispin to be singing in this special concert in the spectacular surroundings of St. Paul’s Cathedral. He will be a great ambassador for us all here at Gloucester Cathedral and will have a wonderful day which he will remember for the rest of his life.”
The fantastic programme of music will include: Allegri’s Miserere, excerpts from Britten’s Friday Afternoons and Ceremony of Carols, Handel’s Zadok the Priest, Tippett’s Five Spirituals, Parry’s I Was Glad and The world premier of a specially commissioned work by Philip Stopford.
