As part of Gloucester’s Summer of Music Arts and Culture (SoMAC), young people in Gloucester now have the exciting opportunity to work alongside professional beatbox and vocal artist Conrad Murray, as well as London based hip hop and contemporary dance company Avant Garde, before performing on stage in King’s Square.

The two free of charge workshops have been programmed by Marketing Gloucester, in partnership with Strike A Light Festival, and are being offered to 13-25 year olds to give the young people in Gloucester the opportunity to learn new skills or develop their talent.

Beatboxer Conrad Murray, who has performed at Royal Festival Hall Southbank Centre, Latitude and Battersea Arts Centre, will be joined by two of his Beatbox Academy members and will be leading a three-day workshop. He described it as “a workshop where you create music using your mouth. The workshop will be for all abilities, from beginner to advanced, to come together and create original pieces and jams. We will be making beats, looping on a loopstation, jamming, singing and creating songs.”

The second, two-day, workshop with Avant Garde Dance will explore hip hop and contemporary dance styles. The company are currently preparing for their national tour of the show Fagin’s Twist and young people taking part in the workshop will explore the characters and moves from the show and work with two dancers from the professional company.

Paul James, Chairman of Marketing Gloucester and leader of Gloucester city council which helped fund the event commented “Gloucester has the youngest population in the south west with a rich diversity of cultural influences and these workshops will help develop the wealth of local talent amongst our young people.  A big thanks to Arts Council England for their financial support and sponsors WSP Solicitors and Listers Toyota”

Young people from both workshops will also get to perform on an outdoor stage in King’s Square, followed by performances from Conrad Murray and Avant Garde, as part of a packed programme of circus, theatre, dance and live music.

The SoMAC stage in King’s Square will be a focal point for free, exciting performance with a festival vibe. There will be live music, hip hop dance, spoken word, street theatre, brought to you by both national and international performers, as well as community-based groups from across Gloucestershire.

Both workshops are free of charge and open to 13-25 years, welcoming all abilities. Within the workshop participants will break into smaller groups so that beginners can find their feet and those with more experience can really push their skills forward.
