Major car parks in the city centre are being fitted with charge points for electric cars and new LED lighting as Gloucester City Council saves energy and helps the environment.

Improvement work has started at car parks in Longsmith Street, Eastgate and Westgate Street.

The car parking at both Eastgate shopping centre and Longsmith Street is being re-fitted with LED (light emitting diode) lights which will save energy and produce less carbon and pollution.

The new lighting will also bring down the cost of energy bills and save money on maintenance as they last longer before needing repair.

In addition, the Westgate Street and Eastgate car parks are being fitted with fast charging electric car points that will charge an electric car within three hours.

The two charging points, part of a countywide installation programme, have cost £10,000 to complete with money coming from the county council’s Local Sustainability Transport Fund.

Cllr Jim Porter, cabinet member for environment said, “The new LED lighting and fast chargers for electric cars will bring major cost benefits and environmental savings to Gloucester’s car parks. LEDs use significantly less energy than conventional fluorescent tubes saving money and carbon. They also last a lot longer and need less maintenance. Electric car owners will be able to put their vehicle on a fast charge while they’re parked in Gloucester and this will help lower emissions from transport around the city.”

Electric cars are being encouraged in the county. They do not emit any pollution and they use less carbon than conventional internal combustion engines.
