Dame Janet Trotter OBE DBE CVO is set to be made an Honorary Freewoman of the City in recognition of her contribution to City of Gloucester.
A special meeting of Gloucester City Council will consider the nomination of Dame Janet who is the Lord-Lieutenant of Gloucestershire as an Honorary Freewoman of the City.
The meeting on Thursday 22 March follows the unanimous agreement of group leaders that Dame Janet should receive the honour.
Among her many achievements, Dame Janet helped found the University of Gloucestershire in 2001 and served as founding vice-chancellor and principal until her retirement in 2006.
As chair of the Council of Church Colleges and Universities she was instrumental in advocating a church presence in higher education and, until recently, was a lay member of Chapter of Gloucester Cathedral.
In addition, Dame Janet has held several positions within the National Health Service in Gloucestershire and the southwest of England, and has previously been chair of the Gloucestershire Hospitals Trust.
She is also involved in a number of local charities including Community Foster Carers, the Nelson Trust and the Cyber Trust: previously she chaired an Expert Working Group for government on Initial Teacher Education and Information Technology.
In 2010 she was appointed as the Lord-Lieutenant and serves as the representative of Her Majesty the Queen in Gloucestershire.
Dame Janet received an OBE in 1991, a DBE ten years later and a CVO in the recent honours list (New Years Honours 2018).
Mayor of Gloucester, Councillor Steve Morgan, said: “Dame Janet has played a significant part in developing higher education in Gloucester and has done an enormous amount for the city and its residents. This along with her charity work, dedication to Gloucester Cathedral and role as Lord-Lieutenant to name but a few of her achievements has not only improved the quality of life in this city but helped to put it on the map. I cannot think of anyone that deserves this honour more than Dame Janet and I am delighted to support her nomination as a Freewoman of the city.”
Dame Janet, said: “This is an enormous honour. I have a passion for Gloucester and the diversity of its people and very much hope to continue to support the city’s development for many years to come.”
