Best-Bar-None-award

The Safer Gloucester NightSafe Group will encourage licensed premises across the city to showcase their business when this year’s Best Bar None award scheme launches on Tuesday 5th July.

The national scheme, which promotes the responsible management and operation of alcohol licensed premises, will launch locally at the Gloucester Guildhall Cinema at 2.30pm.

The awards are open to pubs, bars, late bars and nightclubs that create a safe haven for customers to enjoy themselves responsibly.

Premises, including small local pubs and family friendly pubs are rewarded for good management and good standards.

Last year fifteen premises in the city centre reached accreditation standard and went on to compete against each other for individual awards.

The overall winner, Butler’s Venue Bar, and scheme coordinators attended a celebratory ceremony at the House of Lords where Gloucester won the “National New Best Bar None Scheme” award.

This year, during the summer and autumn, assessments of licensed premises will be carried out by impartial assessors and feedback will be given to all entrants to help them improve.

In January 2017, an awards ceremony will declare a winner for each category of pubs, bars and latebars/nightclubs, small local pubs, family friendly pubs and an overall winner for the city centre.

Cllr Jennie Dallimore, deputy leader of Gloucester City Council said, “Through the Safer Gloucester NightSafe Group, agencies work with licensed premises to make Gloucester city centre a safe and vibrant place to enjoy a night out.

“I’m delighted that Best Bar None will extend across the city this year and good practice can be shared. Our licensed premises have a responsible attitude to safe and sensible drinking and Best Bar None will reward those premises that take pride in trading in a responsible manner.”

Gloucestershire Constabulary’s Inspector Steve Wood said, “I’m pleased that Gloucester is expanding the Best Bar None scheme to reward those premises across the city that provide a safe haven in which consumers can enjoy the licensed trade responsibly. It shows a willingness to address alcohol related crime and anti social behaviour through the promotion of good practice and education.”

Justin Hudson, Manager of Butler’s Venue Bar, Chair of the Gloucester LVA, and winner of Gloucester Best Bar None 2015 said, “I commend this scheme to all licensed premises across the city. The assessment process is helpful and comprehensive and a very positive experience. The icing on the cake for me was to attend the House of Lords in February for the annual reception, meet with other winners across the country and, of course, bring home the trophy for the Best New Scheme!”

The launch will be attended by The Right Worshipful Mayor of Gloucester, Cllr Neil Hampson, CitySafe Manager Richard Burge and National Best Bar None Coordinator Mick McDonnell.
