A man was struck with a metal bar while cycling in Brockworth.

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward in connection with the assault.

It happened on Lobleys Drive at the junction with Stearman Road at about 1.40pm on Monday .

The victim, a 55-year-old man, was cycling alongside his wife, who was running on the pavement, when a male approached them and hit him with a metal bar, causing cuts to his head and hands and grazing and bruising to his wrist. He required staples to the top of his head.

Another cyclist stopped to assist and police would like that man and any other witnesses who haven’t yet come forward to make contact.

Detective Constable Bee Chant said: “This was an apparently unprovoked attack and one that left the victim with some nasty injuries.

“It’s an unusual incident in a low crime area and I want the public to be reassured that we are making good progress with our inquiries.

“However we need more witnesses to come forward as it could be crucial in helping us solve this crime. If you can help please do the right thing and get in touch.”

If you are one of the witnesses and haven’t spoken to police you should call 101 and quote incident 218 of 7 March.

You can also contact the independent crime-fighting charity Crimestoppers anonymously on 0800 555 111 or through their Anonymous Online Form at www.crimestoppers-uk.org. No personal details are taken, information cannot be traced or recorded and you will not go to court.

A 48-year-old Gloucester man has been arrested on suspicion of assault and possession of an offensive weapon in connection with the case and has been bailed to return to police on 18 April, pending further inquiries.
