Gloucestershire Airport and aviation charity fly2help are gearing up to welcome ten lucky teenage students to the Airport during half term, who have been selected for the fly2help Aim High Scholarship programme.
The students will be given a behind-the-scenes insight into the County’s airport – the busiest general aviation airport in the UK – combined with visits to Jet Age Museum and other Airport-based businesses such as Aeros, Babcock Mission Critical Services, Air Traffic Control college Global ATS and the new flight simulator business, Virtual Aerospace. They’ll also be visiting RAF Brize Norton and Rolls Royce and Airbus at Filton during an action packed week.
Fly2help has run scholarship programmes and aviation taster days for young people at the Airport for three years now and is rolling out the initiative to other airports around the UK. The charity has also just relocated its head office from Kemble Airfield to Staverton.
Airport operations director, Darren Lewington said; – “Gloucestershire Airport has chosen fly2help as our charity to support for several years now and we’re proud to run these scholarships. With the charity now joining our diverse Airport community, they’ll have access to a huge range of businesses and activities on their doorstep.
“From the earliest days of flight, on display at our Jet Age Museum, right up to the cutting edge of modern engineering and training, I’m sure they’ll have an enjoyable week. Aerospace is the largest industry sector in our region and is a key economic driver. It’s vital that we bring ‘new blood’ in and we hope the week will inspire these youngsters in their career choices.”
Fly2help’s, Kim Davenport, who runs the scholarship programme said: – “I joined the fly2help team having spent over 30 years at Gloucestershire Airport in a variety of roles. With a national focus on STEM subjects growing, more and more students are looking towards aviation and aerospace for careers and this is a fantastic opportunity for them to see the wide range of roles available.”
