Four Gates of Gloucester is a new, non-commercial website that has been set up to help promote businesses, news and events in and around the Four Gate Streets of Gloucester’s City Centre. It is a voluntary, not-for-profit Social Enterprise seeking to help improve communication and information around the City. It is supported and funded by experienced, successful businesses in the City Centre.

Following the years of success of the Westgate Quarter Association, a group of businesses that supported each other and promoted all that was good, we were asked if the model could extend to cover all four gate streets. It now has its own dedicated office at 2 Friars Court, just off College Street, and staff members working hard to keep it updated. We’re always seeking volunteers though, to help in our mission.

Ivan Taylor, of Truscott’s Jewellers in College Court, is behind the organisation. He has been taking positive action in the City for years, from getting groups of people to help buy the Tailor of Gloucester shop, and bringing together groups of people to purchase and reopen other closed premises in the City, to putting up and watering hanging baskets around Westgate Street and the Cathedral entrance, to employing a cleaner to help with cleaning the street.

It was Ivan’s Idea (and “I’ve an Idea” is something people who know him will often hear him say) to bring the City Centre into the technological age and provide a business directory etc, in the same tenacity a new shopping centre would have its own website and social media.

It also aims to provide one place to publicise all events and positive news stories about the City Centre and to build footfall and awareness to those Independent gems waiting to be explored.

A number of volunteers, employees and the web designers and developers at Absolute Creative in College Street have helped bring the idea to fruition and the site you see today.

It’s by no means a finished project though! We have some ideas for evolving it into phase 2 and if you have any feedback or suggestions for the site, we really would appreciate them. Email us at
