Three new classrooms are being built at Shurdington CofE Primary School to double its capacity.
Gloucestershire County Council has approved a £1.405 million investment into Shurdington C of E Primary School. It will see three new classrooms built along with hall storage, new toilets and some remodelling to the inside of the main building.
The new classrooms and facilities will double the schools capacity and provide spaces for an additional 105 school children in the local area.
The council has approved of £1.149 million funding from s106 developer funds. These funds are used in the local area for things like school expansions, community facilities or road improvements. The Department of Education (DfE) have contributed £0.251 million to the scheme with Shurdington CofE adding the final £5,000.
Work on the Shurdington CofE Primary School refurbishment began in December 2017 and is expected to be completed in time for the new academic year in September 2018.
Richard Boyles, cabinet member for children and young people, said: “This is a really positive commitment from the developer and this council.
“Shurdington Primary School has worked hard to put in place a master plan that will help it to meet the local demand for school places over the coming years.
“It is great news for students, staff and the local community.”
Robert Vines, local member for Brockworth, said: “There is a need for extra places at Shurdington Primary School, so this is excellent news for the local community.
“This section 106 funding will help them to get started on their expansion plans, which will help to meet the demand in the local area.”
Head teacher Jon Millin, said: “I’m very happy with the co-operative effort that has brought this significant investment to our school. It has allowed us to grow with the need of the local community, bring in additional staff and provide new and exciting things for our children.
“We’re now able to offer a greater range of clubs and experiences for our children. This new expansion alongside our excellent hygiene suite and physio therapy room will mean we are able to offer a mainstream education to children who previously may not have been able to access it.”
